(Helen) Yvonne Shelton died on September 11, 2024 at 98 and a half surrounded by loved ones. She was born in a farm house in Moweaqua, Illinois on January 20, 1926. She moved to the Los Angeles area in 1945 hoping to marry the soldier she fell in love with 3 years earlier. They did marry and lived in South Gate and San Pedro for many years. Yvonne’s family and her faith were central to her life. She remained a cheerful and beloved participant in her church and her community well into her 90s. She loved crafting (especially rubber stamping), quilting, crocheting, chatting, cooking/baking, reading, dogs, and being with her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda, and her son-in-law, Steve (Seattle), her daughter-in-law, Carol (Lake Elsinore), four grandchildren, Megan (Bend, Oregon), Julie and partner Nathan (Escondido), Owen and partner Jenna (Kenmore, Washington) and Summer (Wayne, Michigan) and two great grandchildren, Fela and Iván, who was named after her. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces and her beloved church family. Frank, her husband, preceded her in death in 1997, as did Ken, her son, in 2002, and her sister, Ruth May in 2020. Her brother David and her beloved dogs, Gussie, Maggie, and Yvette also preceded her in death.
Her Celebration of Long Life will be held on Friday October 25th at 2 PM at Green Hills Memorial Chapel followed by interment. Reception at San Pedro United Methodist Church follows.
In lieu of flowers, Yvonne would have loved donations to the Harbor Animal Shelter at 957 North Gaffey St. San Pedro, CA 90731 Two of her dogs were adopted from that Center.
