Yooichi Wakamiya (85), born in Los Angeles to Seiichi and Hatsuko Wakamiya on July 10, 1933, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eileen, and their children Craig (Karen) Wakamiya, Michael (Leina) Wakamiya, and Sandra (William) Schaal and grandchildren, Niki, Henry, Alyssa, Andrew, Kajsa, Kyle, and Allison; and his brother Eiji Wakamiya.
After graduating from Long Beach Poly H.S., Yo attended UCLA, where he earned a B.S. and M.S in Electrical Engineering and met his future wife, Eileen Kashiwabara. In 1959, Yo joined Space Technology Laboratories (later TRW) and worked there until retirement in 1992. Yo loved his job as he designed the controls systems for satellites that were vital to the nation’s security.
As a member of the North Torrance Little League East (NTLLE) Board, his planning and budgeting led to the successful relocation of NTLLE and NT Girls Softball League to Hamilton Adult School. Yo also introduced the concept that the players should have a say in the selection of all-star teams.
