William Szieff, Jr.

October 15, 1930 — March 16, 2012

William Szieff was called home to his maker on Friday, March 16, 2012 due to cardiac problems. He was born in 1930 and was raised in Alliance, Ohio. He entered the Air Force in 1948 and served 4 years teaching radio and radar.
He moved to California in 1952 and worked at McDonald Douglas in El Segundo for 3 years. His experience as a teacher in the service showed him that his talent lay in the education field. He gained a BA and MA from Pepperdine University and taught elementary school for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 33 years teaching first at Dolores St School then at Broad Ave. School in Wilmington. He met his wife, Judy in church and married at Lomita First Baptist Church in 1957. They were married for 54 years. Teaching reading was his passion, so after his retirement he became involved with a volunteer group, the Friends of Lomita Library. He worked there for over 10 years until health problems interfered. He was a Lomita Volunteer of the year in 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; a son Bill Szieff (Caitlin) and a daughter Elissa Szieff. There are 4 grandsons and one granddaughter: David Jake Zelhart, 19; Paul Jackson Zelhart, 18; Casey Rae Zelhart, 16; Julian Savory Szieff, 14; and John William Szieff, 11. Bill has one surviving sister, Viola Frost, 86 in North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held at Greens Hills on Thursday, March 22nd at 11:00AM. Donations can be made to the Friends of Lomita Library, 24200 Narbonne Ave., Lomita, CA, 90717. Please note: In Memory of William Szieff.
