William C. Polly ("Bill"), 85, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on October 14th, 2016 in Palm Desert, California.
Bill was born in Glendora, California, but grew up in Wilmington, graduating from Banning High School in 1949. He then attended Harbor College where he met his future wife and (at the time) the current Miss Wilmington, Dorene Cartmel, of San Pedro. They married in 1951.
In 1959, Bill moved his family from San Pedro to Rancho Palos Verdes, where he and Dorene raised their three daughters, Debra, Kathleen, and DeDe. Bill then started his own business in Long Beach where he was a pioneer in repairing containers along with his trucking company in one of the busiest harbors in the world.
Bill was a proud 32nd Degree Mason in their Wilmington Lodge and a member of the Scottish Rite in Long Beach. He loved the outdoors in every respect—fishing, fly fishing, hunting, skiing, hiking, and competitive sailing. He was a member of the Long Beach Yacht Club for over 50 years, sailing to La Paz, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Ensenada, and participated in a Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii. The majority of the crew aboard Bill's boats, "Conquest I" and "Conquest II", were the USC Sailing Team—they were his boys!
Bill moved to Belmont Shore in 1975 where he met and later married Mitzi Hoemann. Together they owned Century 21 coastline. In retirement, he and Mitzi moved to Palm Desert and enjoyed a loving, happy life together consisting of traveling, fine wine, gourmet cooking classes, fishing and sailing together.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mitzi, 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and Mitzi's children Eric and Paula. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 4th at 3:00pm in The Historic Church in Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
