Welton Owens

January 6, 1945 — April 1, 2019

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6

Our beloved, Welton Lee Owens, was born on January 5, 1945 in Damascus, Arkansas, to the late Reverend Mason G. and Essie Mae Owens. He was the oldest of four children; three sisters, Georgia Brownlee, Ishmael Spikes, and Andrea Kennon.

Welton moved to Los Angeles, California in 1953 with his family. He attended 75th Street Elementary School and Edison Junior High School. He graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles in 1963 and worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In 1965, Welton joined the Marine Corps and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Corporal Welton Owens was honorably discharged in 1969. After his military service concluded, he was employed at the United States Postal Service from which he retired after 36 years.

On May 1, 1971, he united in holy matrimony to Alice Hymes. To this union, two daughters were born; Crystal and Dana. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Welton was a quiet, thoughtful and kind man. He enjoyed gardening and working on projects around his home. Also, he was especially passionate about reading the Bible.

At an early age, Welton accepted Christ and was baptized at the Emmanuel Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Amos H. Gaskins in 1956. Later, he joined Mount Carmel Holy Assembly Baptist Church in 1975, where his father, Reverend Mason G. Owens served as the Pastor. He was a Deacon and a member of the Men’s Brotherhood Chorus. One of his favorite songs was “Wash Me Lord.” After retirement, he moved to Victorville, California and joined The First Assembly of God in 2008 under the pastorate of John C. Martin. While a member there, he was an active participant in the Bible study group.

Welton’s life would seem too short for many, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of his existence far exceeded the quantity of time in which he lived. On April 1, 2019, he went home to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family.

To cherish his loving memory, he leaves; his wife, Alice Owens, his two daughters, Crystal Owens and Dana Owens Williams; two sons-in-law, Leland Williams and Curtis Mixon; two grandchildren, Na’ilah and Saudia; three sisters, Georgia, Ishmael, and Andrea; five nieces, Mia, Aisha, Raquel (Goddaughter), Taja and Ashle; four nephews, Anthony, Christopher, Sean and Dameron; five great-nieces and five great-nephews. He also leaves to cherish his memory many relatives and friends.
