Virginia B Spurgeon

November 27, 1932 — August 1, 2023

Virginia Brock Spurgeon, a longtime resident of Palos Verdes Estates known to her friends as “Jinny”, passed away on August 1, 2023

Jinny was born on November 27, 1932 to Jefferson and Jean Brock in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Evanston High School, and then Northwestern University where she became a registered nurse, R.N.

She met her husband, Frederick C. Spurgeon, in the hospital where she worked as a nurse and he was an Intern - Northwestern University’s Wesley Hospital in Chicago (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital). Fred had earned a B.S. at the University of Illinois, and an M.D. from NY Medical College. Shortly after their meeting, a wedding ceremony took place on March 19, 1955, and they were married for 44 years.

They moved to Dallas, Texas, where Fred was stationed as a naval flight surgeon. A couple of years later they moved to Minnesota where he specialized in Ophthalmology, studying at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester with a 3 year Residency.

They settled in Palos Verdes Estates, California in 1961, and raised their three children. Fred began his ophthalmology practice, and Jinny worked in his office from time to time. Over the years she was active in the community and a member of many organizations including her Alpha Chi Omega sorority alumni club where they raised money for college scholarships and also the Crippled Children’s Society. She volunteered with Girl Scouts, Little League, Band and Drill Team. Another great area of interest was in china painting which she began in 1977, and was a member of clubs in CAPA, CCPAA, WOCP and IPAT. She became an IPAT certified artist and teacher.

Jinny cherished her family and friends. She especially adored her grandchildren.

She is survived by her beloved three children, Pam Richards (Wayne), Frederick C. Spurgeon Jr., Kimmer Burgess (Craig); grandchildren Melanie Patalano, Louis Patalano (Samantha) and her two great grandchildren Lily & Brock, and granddaughters Kristen and Jessica Burgess-Rose (Sam).

Jinny has been laid to rest at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, along with Frederick. A memorial service to celebrate Jinny’s life was held.
