Vern suffered a cardiac arrest on July 19 from which he could not be revived. He is survived by his wife Judy, his brother Carl and wife Martha, and his niece and nephew, Carol and Stuart.
Born in Collbran, Colorado, Vern's parents moved the family to Grand Junction where he received his education through high school. His accomplishments obtained him entrance to Princeton University in 1957 where he earned a degree in English and formed lasting friendships with many of his classmates. On leaving Princeton in 1961, a mentor was instrumental in assisting to find Vern a position at Bankers Trust in New York where he remained until 1967, earning an MBA at New York University at night.
Desiring a change to a warmer winter climate, Vern interviewed west across the U.S. and wound up at Security Pacific National Bank in Los Angeles. He met his wife, Judy, when they both were living in the same apartment complex in the mid-Wilshire area in 1969. When Vern was eventually transferred to the San Francisco office of SPNB, he decided that having Judy around permanently would be great so Judy became Mrs. Vernon Close on October 28, 1978.
There followed two years in London (1981 – 1983) with Security's International Banking Group where he was in charge of all credit decisions for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This allowed for travel to some of those locations for pleasure as well as work. Judy joined him for the travel as she did not work during the London stay. Back in Los Angeles after London, SPNB eventually became acquired by Bank of America and Vern left to work as an independent consultant until he took his retirement from B of A.
There will be no service per Vern's request. If you wish, please consider a donation to the International Printing Museum in Carson, California. Vern was a member of the museum's Board of Trustees. (printmuseum.org)
