Verna Mae Royes 'sunrise' was on May 13, 1915, in Caren Hall, St Mary's, Jamaica, West Indies, to Euelee Walker and Tai N uke Kee. Verna 'sunset' peacefully in her home on the morning of June 7, 2023.
Although she was raised in a Catholic home and church, she found the gospel in 1942 and became a devoted member of The Truth. Throughout her early years, Verna's access to education was limited. However, she knew the importance of education and later instilled this in her family. As a young adult, she traveled to New York where she met up with her childhood friend Vicky. As an immigrant in America, Verna knew there were endless opportunities for a career and she was passionate about children so she found employment with a local family.
If you know Verna, then you know how committed she was to the gospel. Within a few weeks, she was introduced to the ''friends'' and began attending meetings there in New York. Thereafter she was introduced to Egbert Stanley Royes, a fellow professing Jamaican, who had recently relocated to the New York area and was working on a Tobacco farm in Connecticut.
Verna and Stanley joined in marriage on December 2, 1948, and then went on to purchase a brownstone in Brooklyn, where they were Sunday morning ''meetings'' in their home. On November 25th, 1949, the couple welcomed their first child Ethel Royes, and soon after they welcomed their son, Donald Royes on December 15th, 1950. Subsequently, they moved back to their home country Jamaica, where they purchased a 300-acre banana farm. By 1958, the Royes family was ready to move back to the United States and it was recommended by their tenant in New York, that they seek relocation to Los Angeles.
By 1960, Stanley Royes began to establish his real-estate portfolio that grew expeditiously and allowed the family to execute the ideal ''American Dream''. As devoted Christians, Verna and Stanley traveled the world visiting friends far and near attending conventions, and special meetings, and participating in the fellowship of meetings in the homes. Ethel and Donald took the guidance of their parents by getting a college education. Ethel went on to become a national award-winning teacher in Texas, and Donald had an ascending career in corporate America. The first granddaughter, Sydney Royes, named after the worker Sydney Holt, was born on March 14, 1979. Followed by Brittinee and Donnis Royes.
In February 2006, patriarch Stanley Royes transitioned. Verna continued to lead the family and welcomed six great-grandchildren: Elliot, Kymora, Sawyer, Turner, Drew and Jael. Her love and faith in the gospel never wavered all these years, it only continued to grow and grow. Today, we celebrate Verna Royes transition to her eternal home and we thank God for the many blessings we received from her life.
