Thomas Aloysius Mcdermott

Thomas Aloysius McDermott, 92, of San Francisco passed away Monday May 1, 2017 at The Canterbury in Palos Verdes, California.

He was born in Lorain, Ohio to Albert James McDermott and Catherine Mary McDermott (nee Foley). He was the 4th of eight children in his family. In 1942, he graduated high school from St Mary's Academy in Lorain, Ohio. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, and served as Radioman 1st Class, in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

After the war, he graduated from Xavier University in 1950. He received his medical degree from Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University in Chicago in 1954. He completed his internship at Philadelphia General Hospital and his residency in Georgetown. He was a fellow at the Cleveland Clinic. He moved to San Francisco in 1959 where he established a solo practice as an Internist specializing in Rheumatology. In 1961 he married Joyce Crosetti and they had one daughter, Carol Anne Bernstein (nee McDermott). He practiced medicine in San Francisco for almost 50 years. In 2014, he moved to Southern California to be close to his family.

Tom was a long time parishioner at Star of the Sea and St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco. He was an avid tennis player. He was a proud member of The Olympic Club and The Family in San Francisco. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage, and enjoyed listening to Irish music and singing songs of his youth. He was also a huge sports fan. He followed all the San Francisco and Cleveland sport teams throughout his life.

He is survived by his only daughter, Carol Anne Bernstein (nee McDermott), his son-in-law, Robert Ian Bernstein, his grandson, Samuel Thomas Bernstein, his granddaughter, Natalie Emma , his former wife Joyce Crosetti, his sister Catherine Hahn (nee McDermott) and his brother-n-law Philip Hahn of Elyria, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert James McDermott and Catherine Mary McDermott (nee Foley), sisters Mary Kane (nee McDermott), Rita Barnard (nee McDermott), Teresa "Joan" Lowrie (nee McDermott), and brothers Thomas McDermott, Michael McDermott and Albert McDermott.

Memorial Services will be held on May 25th at 10:30am at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach. Burial services will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park in Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor in San Francisco at www.littlesistersofthepoor.org .
