Suzanne V. Mcdermott

December 8, 1963 — September 17, 2016

Suzanne Valerie McDermott (nee Brody) passed away on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at the age of 52.

Born in Athens, Greece, on December 8, 1963, Suzanne spent the first year of her life "in the shadow of the Acropolis," and her early sentences were a combination of Greek and English. Along with her parents, Dr. William and Stella Brody, the family moved to Southern California, where she resided for the rest of her life.

Suzanne graduated from South Torrance High School and from California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in Communications. She immediately began her employment with Toyota Motor Corporation and remained a loyal employee for 30 years.

Only a month after starting work at Toyota, Suzanne married the love of her life, John McDermott. They were one month shy of their 30th anniversary at the time of her death. Together they raised two amazing and compassionate children, Patrick and Colleen, whom they adored deeply.

From an early age, Suzanne was a lover of all things musical. She regularly performed in musical theater and was an integral part of her church's (St. Lawrence Martyr) musical worship group. In addition to singing, Suzanne devoted much energy to the Bridge ministry for middle school kids, Engaged Encounter, and when her children were young, to Cornerstone Elementary School in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Following a 16-year courageous battle with lymphoma, Suzanne passed away peacefully at her mother's home in Redondo Beach, after nearly a week of constant visitors delivering love, sharing memories and serenading her with beautiful music.

Suzanne is survived by her husband, John McDermott; her children, Patrick (girlfriend Claire Bendig) and Colleen; her parents Stella Leontsini and William (Barbara) Brody; her step-father Dan Watts; her brother David Brody; her sister and family Alexia (Scott) Kadish, Zakary, Ethan and Elyse; her half-sister Michele Hughes; her step-siblings Kelli Watts, Mark (Michelle) Watts and Kristin (Sandy) Lobenstein; her aunts, Esther Brody and Marcella (Peter) Mitilineos and family; her mother-in-law, Theresa McDermott; her sister-in-law, Kathleen McDermott. In addition, Suzanne will be deeply missed by an immeasurable number of supportive friends and colleagues.
