Susan Hathaway Ladd

October 9, 1944 — September 27, 2020

Sukie Hathaway Ladd passed away peacefully at the age of “39” surrounded by her family.

Born in Endicott, NY, Sukie was raised in Owego, where she grew up working in the family grocery store alongside her four siblings. Sukie graduated from Owego Free Academy in 1962 and later attended Alfred University.

She married Gordon Barlow, with whom she had two children, and they later moved to Port Washington, NY where she worked at IBM as a Systems Engineer. Sukie moved to Palos Verdes in 1979 where she raised her family and was an Elder and active member of St. Peters by the Sea. There, everyone knew her and people were drawn to her outgoing personality that made anyone who encountered her feel welcome.

In 1990, Sukie returned to college in an effort to remain “smarter than her children,” graduating from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1997, two weeks before her son graduated from college. She later went on to receive her Masters in Business Administration in 2000, and spent the remainder of her career working within the Fiscal Services divisions of school districts in the South Bay.

In 2009, Sukie married Glenn Ladd and they enjoyed travelling together; especially their adventures in Alaska and China, and most recently Paris where they lived like Parisians for a few weeks in a rented apartment. Visiting family was also important to Sukie, and she always loved her visits with family from Torrance to Tucson to Towaco.

Sukie’s adventuresome spirit also lived in her cooking, finding new recipes in the morning, and serving a gourmet dinner that night. She happily accepted the mishaps as well, often wondering aloud if her scalloped potatoes would be soup, glue or super glue. When she wasn’t cooking, Sukie loved dancing with Glenn, attending concerts at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and Hollywood Bowl, drinking copious amounts of cranberry juice, eating chicken salad sandwiches at Y’Not Burger, and enjoying a glass of wine with a friend. She also loved charting everything in Excel, being “Glama” to Harrison and Kat, and walking around the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Sukie was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, sister Bonnie, and parents Katharine and Clarence “Stub” Hathaway. She is survived by her son Craig Barlow, daughter Stacey Barlow and husband Richard DelGizzi, stepdaughters Jennifer Omo, Heather Ladd and Morgan Harlan, grandchildren Harrison and Katharine DelGizzi, Mark and Scott Omo, and siblings Carol, Bill and Phil Hathaway.

In lieu of flowers, take a friend to lunch and enjoy!

Family and friends of Susan are invited to share their favorite photos, video memories and heart felt messages on her Tribute page on the Green Hills Mortuary Website.
