Sue passed away on August 5, 2018 at the age of 87. Sue Sumiko Iwata was born on February 28, 1931 in Los Angeles, California.
Sue is survived by her three daughters and their spouses: Carol Franklin and Ted Franklin, Susan Tado and Mario Dieguez, Terri Karle and John Karle, along with her four grandchildren: Niki Franklin, David Karle, Michael Karle, Joshua Karle and Mario’s son, Mario Dieguez Jr. Along with her brothers and sisters Miyeko, Johnny, Betty, Jerilyn, Donald and Ernie.
After several years in Japan, she returned to the United States, as a teenager, thanks to her sister Betty. She then worked as a house girl for a family and attended Beverly Hills High School. Somewhere along the way, this shy girl was at a dance and met her future husband, David Tado. In July of1 952, they married and started their journey together. By the end of 1958, they had three little girls in tow.
In 1967, she lost her David to Cancer and spent the rest of her life caring and loving her daughters and their families. She worked so hard to be a fantastic mother and grandmother from that point on.
With her in-laws they owned two plant nurseries in Gardena. Sue would start her day at 4:30 A.M. watering the plants by hand and planting new stock; come home at 7:30 A.M. and get the girls to school and then return to work until sometimes 6 or 6:30 in the evening, six days a week. In typical Japanese fashion, she would work tirelessly to do her share and then helped the elders.
Sue loved making her family happy. If you said you liked something, the next thing you knew she was showing up with a half dozen of that item. She loved making sushi for New Year’s Day and taking it to her sisters, brothers and entire family.
But, her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. Sue loved spoiling us and the grandchildren. Sue raised us girls to be strong and to take care of ourselves; we are forever thankful to her. Sue is now resting alongside her beloved husband, David. Her loving family and all that knew her will miss Sue. .Mom’s flame will be with us forever. We will love you always Mom.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to Alzheimer’s' "Walk to Remember" coming up on Oct. 6, 2018. The link to the page is:
