Skaidrite Ranne Bahraman
Skaidrite was born in Lubana, Latvia, to Arnold and Daina Ranne. Near the end of World War II, the family escaped from Latvia to Germany while Russia was invading Lativa and the neighboring Baltic States Litovania and Stonia. Luckily, the family was placed in a US camp in Germany and later was allowed to immigrate to Iowa. Skaidrite went to school in Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa, with a BA in Romance Languages. Thereafter she went to the University of California at Berkeley and received a Master Degree in Romance Languages. She knew and spoke fluently Spanish, French, Italian, and of course, English and Latvian. While continuing for a PhD, she met Ali Bahraman at Berkeley, who was pursuing a PhD program in Electrical Engineering. Skaidrite and Ali got married in June 1969. Later on they moved to the South Bay area in Redondo Beach, and then in 1986 purchased a lovely house in Palos Verdes Estates. Skaidrite loved and enjoyed her new residence with beautiful views to the ocean and the hills. She loved to cook, read, and was an Opera fan. Her Saturday mornings during the Met Opera season were dedicated to listening to the KUSC broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera from New York City. She was an avid collector of opera records and books. She was also a fan of the world-famous mystery writer Agatha Christie.
Skaidrite and Ali loved to travel, and through the many years together they made several trips to Europe (England, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, and the Czech Republic), Canada, the United States, Mexico, South America, and Asia. They had planned to re-visit London and Southern Italy in 2011, but had to cancel because Skaidrite was diagnosed with esophagus cancer in July 2011 and had to undertake a painful Chemo and Radiation treatment program. However, throughout her battle with the cancer, she kept a cheerful and hopeful attitude and really enjoyed the many visits by her neighbors, friends, and family. Their support and affection did indeed help her cope with her ordeal. Skaidrite was a one-of-a-kind woman. It is amazing that throughout her illness, she was more worried about her husband than herself. She passed away on April 27, 2012, but she lives in the minds of her loving husband, friends, and family.
