Shirley McLennan Cameron, a native Southern Californian and 46-year resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, recently passed away at the age of 81. Shirley was born in Santa Monica to Russell and Scharlotte McLennan, and she graduated from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles where she was an award-winning student and leader in Girl Scouts. At UCLA, she studied Kinesiology and prepared for a career in Physical Therapy. While at UCLA, Shirley met Ronald Bruce Cameron, MD, her husband of 59 years, and she graduated with honors while serving as an officer and member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She attended the graduate program in physical therapy at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles and USC on a full academic scholarship.
Shirley lovingly raised four children, all of whom graduated from UCLA. In 1981, she resumed her career as a Physical Therapist at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance. Shirley ultimately became the Supervisor of patient care in the LCMH Physical Therapy Department and retired in 1996 after 15 years of service. In later years, she spent most of her time with her family, while volunteering many hours with the South Bay Literacy Council and the Children's Ministry at Hope Chapel in Hermosa Beach.
Shirley is survived by her husband Ronald, her children Bruce, Caroline (Richard Yarp), Randall (Ingrid Cameron) and Diane (Tom Strickfaden), and her grandchildren Alison and Meredith Yarp, Yuri and Edward Cameron, and Christine and Thomas Strickfaden III. The celebration of her life will be in the Chapel at Green Hills Memorial Park on Friday, April 20th at 3:00 p.m. PT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
