Sammie R. Logan age 81 passed away peacefully May 22, 2013 at Torrance Memorial Hospital with her husband of 63 years holding her hand. Sammie was born on March 11, 1932 in Ada, Oklahoma.

Sammie is preceded in death by her parents Julius and Rena Rose Roberson, daughter Pamela, Son-In-Law Boyd Lunsford and grand-daughters Nancy, Candy and Birdie Lunsford. She is survived by her Husband Grant, daughters Jennifer and Nancy, her son Grant Jr.as well as 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Early in life Sammie lived on a farm near Otis, New Mexico and worked in 4-H (Head, Hands, Heart, Health) club raising calves and earning credits in sewing and cooking. She attended school in Carlsbad, New Mexico and enjoyed playing clarinet in the high school band. She was also active with the Future Home Makers Club, the Future Teachers Club and the Girls Athletic Club all of which were lifelong influences.

She married Grant Logan her high school sweetheart in 1949 and they moved to Albuquerque New Mexico where Grant attended UNM earning his Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree. Meanwhile they were blessed with three daughters, Jennifer, Nancy and Pamela. Sammie enrolled at UNM in 1956 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1959 with a 3.87 GPA. Sammie began her teaching career in Albuquerque teaching from 1959 to 1961. Later in 1961, Sammie and Grant with their three daughters moved to Torrance California to continue their careers in education. In 1964 they were blessed with their only son, Grant Jr. Sammie taught sixth grade at Riviera Elementary and J.H. Hull Middle School during her 32 years with Torrance Unified School District. During this period she served in several professional education organizations including the TTA, PTA, CTA and NEA. Her husband Grant also had an equally long career as an elementary school principal with TUSD. In 1975 Sammie earned her Master's Degree in General Education from Pepperdine University. She also earned over 50 units of study from UCLA, UCS, Laverne and Cal State Long Beach throughout her career. After retirement in 1992 she continued to serve as a substitute teacher and served with the CRTA and Kappa Kappa Iota which is a service organization for women in education.

Sammie was also an active member of the Torrance Christian Church and later the South Bay Christian Church. During her years at the Torrance Church she held office of Deacon and Elder. She was also a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship and volunteered with the CYF. For 12 years Sammie and Grant hosted Bible Study at their home where many friendships were established. Sammie was also active with the Torrance YMCA. She was a member of the women's group, Las Hermanas, served as Advisor and Counselor for Youth Groups as well as Advisor and Counselor for Senior Adult Activities. As a final act of service to the community Sammie volunteered at Torrance Memorial Medical Center for over 20 years. She served on the Auxiliary Board, served on the Board of Directors, held the positions of Vice President Hospital Services, Public Relations Director and Parliamentarian. Sammie valued the relationships developed during her years of service and felt very fulfilled by them.

Sammie enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, sewing, gardening, camping, dance (including folk, ballroom and square dancing) and especially giving back to the community through volunteerism.

Memorial services will be Friday May 31st at 3:00pm Green Hills Memorial Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes.
