Sam Mavar, a longtime resident of San Pedro, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012. He was born August 29, 1931 to Sam and Katie Mavar, and was the youngest of four children.
Sam had many stories of his early adventures growing up in San Pedro with his brothers and boyhood friends. He joined the Merchant Marines at an early age, served in the Army and was stationed in Germany, spent several years as a tuna fisherman, and 35 years as a longshoreman in ILWU Local 13. After retirement, he enjoyed working on his boat at the marina, and visiting with close friends and family.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Patricia; daughters Kathy Mavar, Maureen Mavar, and Samantha Marshall (Mike); son Kevin Mavar; grandson Andy Mavar; brother John Mavar (Nancy); and sister, Mary Tripps of Bellingham, WA. Sam was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Mavar.
