Sally Fechner

May 18, 1934 — August 21, 2022

The world lost a shining light on August 21, 2022 when Sally J. Fechner died. She was 88 years old, and the center of the extended Fechner family. Sally Durbin was born in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Milliken University, she moved to Manhattan Beach when she started working for TWA Airlines as a stewardess. While on the beach there, she struck up a conversation with Karl Fechner, the man she would soon marry. They eventually moved to Palos Verdes Estates and had 4 children and 7 grandchildren. Karl and Sally were married for 64 years, until Karl died 4 months earlier than Sally on April 20, 2022. Sally had a giant heart and loved helping people. She would spot a need in those around her and try to help fill it through her efforts or contributions. She did this not just for her family, but also for friends and acquaintances. After Sally's death, one such acquaintance wrote to the family, "I'm convinced that God placed Sally in our lives to prove to us that angels do exist," and "Sally was a humanitarian at heart." Sally was a talker who enjoyed hearing about the lives of others. While watching her grandkids' soccer games, she could often be found wandering the sidelines, striking up conversations with strangers and learning their life stories. She enjoyed playing tennis, singing in The Generation Gap group and being involved in her kid's sports. Throughout her life, she maintained a great sense of humor and a strong interest in science, especially regarding the human brain. Sally always had a curious nature and love of vocabulary. Sally was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Durbin. She is survived by her 4 children: Lanelle Fechner, Steve Fechner (Lori), Jodi Fechner (Jen), Jenny Sneeringer (Ray). She leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Seb Fechner, Ava Fechner, Emily Fechner, Camille Fechner, Tess Fechner, Jack Sneeringer and Margaret Sneeringer. Sally is also survived by her brother, John Durbin. A service will be held in the Chapel at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes at 11:30am on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
