On January 16, 2024, Ruth Purdon passed away peacefully in her sleep at Sunrise Senior Living in Hermosa Beach, California. She was 103 1 years old. Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1920, she spent her middle school years in McAllen, Texas and her University years in Minnesota. She ultimately moved to Manhattan Beach in 1949. As a newlywed fresh from Minnesota she finished her degree at UCLA. She raised 3 daughters with her husband Bill. Ruth kept busy in the home and in business working on the books and advertisements for Purdon Appliances (now the location of a large hotel on Sepulveda), and she oversaw apartment rentals which she and her husband developed in Manhattan Beach. Besides activities in her church, she joined civic groups like the Beach Cities Symphony and the Beach Pixies (which focused on young women and children). Ruth Purdon was well loved by family and friends. She was a 74 year resident of Manhattan Beach and a member of the Manhattan Beach Community church where she was very active. She was a philanthropist giving to her church, the arts, and many charities. Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, William Purdon. She is survived by her 3 children: Pat Miller, Linda Cole, Susan Sutherland, her extended family which includes sons-in-law, 10grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 11great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at Manhattan Beach Community Church, 303 South Peck Avenue, Manhattan Beach CA on Saturday, March 9 2024 at 2pm, with reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ruth Purdon Charity Fund in care of the Manhattan Beach Community Church or to a favorite charity of your choice.
