Ruth A. Dair

September 29, 1926 — March 24, 2013

Ruth Alta (Crum) Dair, 86, died in San Pedro on Palm Sunday, March 24. A life-long resident of Los Angeles County, she was born on September 29, 1926 in Burbank and raised in Glendale. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Vincent's Hospital until she and her husband Frank started their family. They married on June 9, 1952 at Holy Family Church in Glendale, where Ruth and her family were parishioners. They moved to their San Pedro home in 1957 and raised seven children there, adding on rooms as needed to accommodate their ever-growing family.

Dair family life centered around a shared passion for sailing, and they spent many days together cruising and racing the waters of Southern California. Weekends were filled with trips to Catalina and local racing. Summer vacations included cruises to the Channel Islands and Mexico, and camping trips with close family friends. Ruth and Frank and their children found lifelong friendship and strong community support in their active involvement with the Buccaneer and Cabrillo Beach Yacht Clubs, sharing many a meal and special occasion with their sailing friends.

After Frank retired, he and Ruth traveled extensively throughout the U.S. in their motorhome, often with a group of friends they called "The Mutineers," and also enjoyed trips to Europe and Israel and several cruises.

Ruth will be remembered by all for her calm and easy-going nature, and the great pleasure she took in life. She felt very blessed to have a strong and happy marriage and a large family. Her Catholic faith was an enduring comfort to her, and she was a devoted parishioner for 56 years of Holy Trinity Church in San Pedro, where their children attended elementary school.

She leaves behind her husband Frank and six children: Kathy Smith (Paul) in Israel, Lori Dair (Rob MacCoun) in El Cerrito, Steve and Kenny Dair (Amy) in San Pedro, Linda Gray (Cliff) in Helendale, Bryan Dair (Angela Goodwin) in Long Beach. She was preceded in death by her son David. She has fourteen grandchildren: Timna, Idit, Yosef, and Noam Smith; Madeline and Audrey MacCoun; Cheryl, Greg, Jackie, and Frank Dair; Ryan and Ashley Gray; Katrina and Jenna Dair; and a great grandson, Maayan Gavish. She is also survived by her brother James Crum (Lois) in Alaska.

Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Providence Little Company of Mary's -- San Pedro Institute for Nursing ( https://california.providence.org/Little-Company-of-Mary-Foundation ).
