Russell Weeks passed away peacefully at Little Company of Mary Hospital June 11, 2013, after suffering a major heart attack at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes where he lived for the past 46 years. He was born on a river boat ion the Missouri River in Missouri and spent his childhood in Bailey, Tennessee, near Memphis. In 1936, he and his father, Samuel Weeks, migrated to Los Angeles, California after his mother, Pauline Weeks, died. He married Alice L. Weeks in 1940. They were married for over 70 years until she passed away in 2011. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth and Roger Weeks, four grandchildren, Greg Weeks, Claudia Laughter, Madison and Austyn Weeks, and three great grandchildren, Ethan, Nolan and Vivienne.
He spent his career in the retail and wholesale food industry with Thriftimart Markets and Smart & Final wholesale grocers building and remodeling their stores and facilities throughout California, Nevada and Arizona. He retired after 43 years of service as Director of Development. During those forty-three years he built many long lasting friendships with people he worked with in the industry. He will be missed by the many friends he made.
He loved to hunt and fish and spent many years pursuing his love of the outdoors especially in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California.
Russell Weeks was a self made man who met the challenge of pulling himself out of abject poverty and achieving success in his career to building a home and life for his family. He was a man of honor and integrity and demanded no more of those around him than he expected of himself. May he rest in peace.
