Rosario C. Campos

May 15, 1937 — October 21, 2022

Rosario “Chayo” Corona Campos, our beloved mother, aunt, friend, and comadre, passed away on October 21, 2022.

She was born in El Paso, Texas on May 15, 1937 and was the eldest of five children. She is survived by her daughters Amelia and Brigida, her son Chris and her daughter-in-law Rina. Our mom is preceded in death by her husband Manuel Campos, as well as by her son Alexander, and her son-in-law, Bret Stauffer.

Rosario was one of five sisters, and she loved her sisters dearly: Helen, Mellie, Bertha, and Jenny. She was the first in her family to graduate high school and she enjoyed reading, learning, and teaching others throughout her full and joyful life.

Mom will be greatly missed by family, by generations of nieces and nephews, as well as by the extended family of friends whom she loved, fed, and nurtured. She wanted to know everyone she met and was always eager to make new friends.

Our mom had a long working life which included working as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, a stay at home mom, and as a teacher’s aide for Hawthorne School District. For over 20 years, she worked at Zela Davis School, teaching our friends and later their children and keeping connected with the neighborhood. She was a dedicated Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troop Mom, she attended all of our school events, and she worked hard in the PTA. She made sure that we explored our hometown, taking us to the beach, parks and libraries on the bus or by foot, as she never learned to drive. She wanted us to know about our family history and what growing up in El Paso had been like. Jazz music was her favorite but she also loved mariachi, rock, and Tex-Mex music—never missing a chance to dance and sing along.

She wanted to know everything— about art, music, history and language. She wanted to know everyone— neighbors, strangers, kids, and dogs. She wanted to have adventures— recently dreaming of space flight and sky dives.

Her impact on those she knew and loved is simply immeasurable and will endure in our hearts from this day on.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 29 at 9 am, at
Green Hills Mortuary, 27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.

***Private interment by the family is set for a later date at the Los Angeles National Cemetery.***
