Roquita Lucero Yabut

August 16, 1933 — May 18, 2022

Roquita Lucero Yabut passed away in her sleep on May 18, 2022 in Torrance, California after a long struggle with dementia. She was 88 years old. Roquita was born on August 16, 1933 in Cebu, Philippines. She was the fourth of eight children of Prudencia and Luis Lucero. Their family lived in the small coastal town of Alegria, where she spent most of her childhood years with her four sisters and three brothers. As a child she experienced many hardships during Japan’s World War II occupation of the Philippines. She attended college in Cebu City at San Carlos University and finished after four years with a degree in Commerce and Accountancy. She moved to Manila and worked for the Philippine government as an auditor for the Commission on Audit where she met Rodolfo “Rudy” Yabut. They married in 1968 and settled in Manila, where their four children were born. The family emigrated to the United States in 1993. Roquita and her husband were faithful Roman Catholics and made sure that the tradition was passed on to their children by constant practice. She enjoyed working as a volunteer at Vermont Care Center, where she assisted the residents in the activities department and developed many friendships over the years. She was a skilled seamstress and an avid gardener, spending most of her spare time sewing and taking care of her orchids. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and their children. She was always warm and welcoming and loved hosting special gatherings for friends and family. Roquita was a selfless and hardworking wife and a mother who dearly loved her husband and took great care of her children. She was a loyal friend, remembered by all for her kindness and generosity.

Roquita was predeceased by her husband Rodolfo in 2007 and, over the years, by 6 of her 7 siblings. She is survived by sister Rizalina Carampatan (Rogelio); children Jennifer Hughes (Cameron), Jeffrey Yabut, Judith Broadhurst (Andrew), and John Yabut (Christina); and by grandchildren Russell Hughes, Rachel Broadhurst, Ivan Yabut, Asher Yabut, and Emily Yabut.
