Roosevelt Birl

March 11, 1925 — October 6, 2013

Roosevelt Birl, Sr. was born in Bowie, Texas on March 11, 1925 to Marshall Birl and LuLu Birl (who preceded him in death). Roosevelt accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at New Town Baptist Church in Texarkana, Texas. Poppa (as he is lovingly referred to by his family) received his education in Texas and then moved to California in 1957 where he established residency. Roosevelt worked for the City of Los Angeles and retired after 37 years of service. He was a member of Central Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor David Buggs and later became an ordained deacon. Roosevelt was a good ole country man who enjoyed his life fishing, hunting, cooking, gardening, traveling and camping with his family. After retiring from the City of Los Angeles, he went back to work for the Los Angeles School Board until his health failed. Although he faced very serious crises concerning his health, he never lost hope or his quick wit and great sense of humor. Poppa is now with his Heavenly Father. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Deaconess Betty Birl of Compton, CA, two sons, Stanley Birl and Keith Birl of Los Angeles. One daughter, Rosemary Birl-Klema of Alliance, Ohio; two step sons, Clarence Remble, III of Colorado, and Charles Eldridge of Compton, CA, four step daughters, Florenda Geter (Roy) of Moreno Valley, CA, Linda Thierry (John) of Long Beach, CA, Fonda Smith (Dan) of Long Beach, CA and Rochelle Hamilton (Rodney) of Long Beach, CA. One brother, Lawrence Birl of Bellflower, CA. Three sisters, Emma Jean Cannon, Ruby Lee Birl and Trudie Evelyn German of Los Angeles, CA, a host of great grand children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and special friends. He is preceded in death by one son Roosevelt Birl, Jr. and five siblings, J.C. Birl, Corina Birl Taylor, E.D. Birl, Willie Birl, and Ethel Birl.
