Rona Cheryl Tomkinson

February 24, 1929 — August 30, 2023

Rona Tomkinson, known affectionately as Nana, embraced life with a spirit of adventure and a heart brimming with kindness. Born in the United Kingdom on February 24, 1929, Rona was one of four siblings, the only one among them to embark on a journey to create a new life abroad. She was also a survivor of WW2 and all the tragedy that everyone in Europe had to face. At the age of 22, she and her husband, Donald Tomkinson, set forth on a new chapter, leaving England for the promise of Canada, and later settling in California.

In her early years, Rona pursued education, attending business college at a young age, showcasing her determination and dedication to personal growth. She met Donald at 17 and married him at 20, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together. As they started their family, Rona became a devoted mother, emphasizing the importance of family bonds and a nurturing environment.

Rona's strength was matched only by her gentle and caring nature. She had an uncanny ability to light up any room with her infectious smile, making everyone feel welcome and cherished. Even during challenging times, she exhibited resilience and grace, leaving a positive imprint on the lives she touched.

Her interests were as diverse and vibrant as her personality. Rona had a passion for hosting lavish parties and posh afternoon teas, needlepointing magnificent patterns, making topiary trees and wreaths, knitting beautiful blankets, and collecting antique treasures, her favorite being the exquisite Chintz style. She embraced the joy of dance, the tranquility of swimming, utilizing her green thumb to create a gorgeous garden, the camaraderie found on the golf course and creating a home beautifully decorated & filled with warmth like an English cottage. Family getaways, visits to the Redondo Beach pier, and travel adventures were all pursuits she adored, cherishing every moment spent with loved ones.

Rona's heart remained close to her roots, frequently journeying back to England to maintain strong bonds with her family. Her genuine curiosity about people made her a delightful companion, leaving an indelible mark on those she encountered.

In 1959, Rona ventured into a remarkable career that spanned 25 years, showcasing her sharp mind and remarkable talents. As an executive secretary in the travel and legal industries, she demonstrated poise and competence, paving the way for women in her field.

Nana faced life's trials with unwavering grace. Following the loss of her husband Donald and her partner Mac, she continued to radiate love and remained a guiding presence for her grandchildren. After the passing of her daughter, Jacqueline Anne, she stood as a pillar of strength, demonstrating love and support beyond measure.

In her twilight years, Rona found companionship and joy in her friendships, especially with Jack Jacobson. Her ability to create lasting connections highlighted her warm and caring spirit.

As we bid farewell to Rona Tomkinson, we celebrate a life rich with love, adventure, and genuine connection. She truly dedicated her life to her family and will always be known as a devoted wife, amazing mother, an incredible grandmother & great-grandmother. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, warmth, and an enduring love that will forever be etched in our hearts.

Rona Tomkinson is survived by her grandchildren, Jason Raymond, Jessica Anne, as well as her great-grandchildren, Jacqueline Leigh, Thomas Anton and Eliana Rose. She is also survived by her brother Earl Inman and many nieces and nephews in England.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Rona's name to UNICEF, reflecting her passion for the ideal that all children should have an opportunity for a happy and healthy life.
May her soul find peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
