Romeo Foronda Sampaga

August 23, 1939 — January 26, 2023

Romeo Foronda Sampaga was born August 23, 1939 in San Esteban, Ilocos Sur, Philippines
to Marcelo Morgan Sampaga, Sr., and Eulalia Edralin Foronda. Our beloved husband, father,
grandfather, uncle, and friend went with our Lord on Thursday, January 26, 2023. Romy, as he
was known to friends, family, and the St. Philomena congregation where he served as a
Eucharistic Minister for many years, was a beloved and faithful member of the community.
Romy is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Alicia, who first met when they were
seventeen years old, and his five children and their partners: Reynaldo (Robin), Maria
(Jonathan), Renato, Rex and Raymond (Sarai); and grandchildren Caitlin, Teryn (mother Sharon
Sampaga), Jimena, and Jacob. Romy joins his dear grandchild, Derek and beloved daughter,
Mary Perpetua, in heaven.

Romy was one of eight siblings, and survived by his sisters Marilyn Cuison of Baguio, Philippines, and Evelyn Estacio of Sydney, Australia. Romy immigrated to the U.S. with his 3 eldest children in 1969 to join his wife, who worked as a nurse in Chicago, Illinois. After the birth of their two youngest children, the family relocated to Wilmington, California, near where his aunt Soledad Ycoy and her family were living in San Pedro. Romy began a successful career as a manager in the property insurance industry, and enjoyed playing golf with his close circle of friends.

Romy continued to serve the Catholic church after his retirement, giving communion during church, nursing homes & those homebound in the St. Philomena community. Romy will forever be remembered for his humor, intellect, and compassion and generosity of spirit for those most in need. Friends and family will always remember “Uncle Romy” as the life of the party, who had the best stories and the greatest wisdom for those seeking guidance or spiritual nourishment. Romy was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's and progressed to dementia, but he never lost his reverence and love for family, especially his beloved wife, Alicia. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 10:30 am at St. Philomena Church, 21900 S Main Street, Carson CA.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in memory of our loved one to: Alzheimer’s Los Angeles.
