Robert "Bob" Osornio

Robert "Bob" Osornio was born in Sonora, Arizona on April 12, 1920. He passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 17, 2016 in his San Pedro home. He was 96 years old. He was the only child of Efren and Justina Osornio. The family settled in San Pedro, California. Robert attended Barton Hill Elementary, Dana Junior High, and San Pedro High School. Robert graduated from San Pedro High School in 1939. He played baseball, boxed, and continued to be an avid sports fan into his adult life. He especially loved college sports, his all-time favorite team being USC. In 1941, he married and shortly thereafter had a daughter, Dolores Justina Osornio. Robert became a Class A Longshoreman book #13141 on October 1, 1942. In 1943, at the age of 23 Robert was drafted to the United States Army. He served in World War II in the Transportation Corps in the 243rd Port Company and was stationed in Luzon, Southern Philippines and New Guinea. After serving in the Army for 2 years and 8 months, Robert returned to the ILWU. He became very active in the political aspects of his union and was an Executive Board member of the ILWU Memorial Hall. In 1994 Robert transferred from Local 13 to Local 63 and became a Longshore Clerk. He retired a proud Longshoreman on July 1, 2002 at the age of 81. He then became an active member of the ILWU Pensioners Group. He was the first longshoreman to make and sell ILWU T-shirts, hats, stickers, etc. using the union label. Robert traveled to all the ILWU Ports including Hawaii, Australia and Canada to sell his goods and promote solidarity. Education was very important to Robert; So much, that he provided an education for hundreds of students by sponsoring a school in Mexico, as well as supporting Barton Hill Elementary School in San Pedro with generous donations for many years. He participated in "San Pedro Neighbors for Peace and Justice". You may have seen him on the corner of 1st and Gaffey on Friday nights holding up signs reading, "Bring Our Men Home". Robert is preceded in death by his daughter Dolores Justina (Ernest) Chavez and great grandchild Trever Chavez-Feipel. He is survived by his wife Lucia Sanchez Osornio of 21 years, his sons Robie (Daphne) Osornio and Daryl (Joan) Page, as well as his sister Erendira "Dee Dee" (Joe) Mendoza. Robert had 10 grandchildren: Diana (Bill) Chavez-Feipel, Jeff Page, Laura (Rich) D'Anna, Tres Page, Trevor (Elizabeth) Page, Ernie (Meridith) Chavez II, Mark, Angel, Nick and Joseph Osornio. Robert had 13 great grandchildren: Aaryn & Lauryn Maes; Tyler & Tayler (His #1) Chavez-Feipel; Zoe Page; Ernie III, Evan, Eyan, & Emma Chavez; Jonah & Bronx Page; Matthew & Anthony D'Anna. He also had 1 great-great grandchild: Zane Page

Funeral service will be held at the historic church of Green Hills Memorial Park (27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275) on Wednesday, June 29th 2016 at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to ILWU Local 13 Scholarship
