Robert Estrada Escobedo, 97, passed away on June 15, 2025, in Santa Monica, California. He previously resided with his wife and family in Harbor City, California, for 46 years.
Robert was born on November 4, 1927, to Rosendo Escobedo and Sara Estrada Escobedo. He married Estella Garcia Escobedo on January 30, 1949, and they were married for 52 years. After attending classes at Santa Monica College, he worked as a Precision Machinist for different companies before opening his own business.
Robert is survived by his children: Linda McDannel Lee, Margarita Chie and her husband Chak Ming Chie, and Robert Escobedo, Jr., and his wife Rebeka Escobedo. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Daniella Escobedo, Ian McDannel Lee and his wife Jacquelyn Yocum-Lee, Linda Stephanie Lee, and Robert Daniel Escobedo and his wife Eden Escobedo. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren: Jonathan Yocum-Lee, Benjamin Yocum-Lee, and Clair Yocum-Lee.
Siblings now deceased are Sara Escobedo Lopez, Frank Escobedo, Carlos Escobedo, Rachel Escobedo Barrona Galvan , and Louis (Mando) Escobedo. He enjoyed the company of numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Robert worked as a Carpenter, Bricklayer, and later a Precision Machinist. He made parts for the aerospace industry including one that he autographed that is still sitting on the moon!
As a teen Robert taught himself to play the guitar. After he retired, he took guitar lessons and learned to read music. He played and beautifully sang his precious Mexican songs. He also made radio-controlled planes and flew them locally as well as at a meet-up in Mexico.
Robert was drafted into the US Army in 1945 at the age of 18 and was headed to fight in Europe, but his orders were suddenly changed to a post in the Philippines. He never spoke of his war experience but did share the antics he and his buddies pulled while there. He was honorably discharged as a PFC in 1947.
Funeral and burial will be held at Green Hills Mortuary on June 25, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.
