Former Coach, Softball All Star, Passes Robert E. Costa
Lifelong California South Bay resident, Robert E. Costa, witnessed the flag raising at Mt. Surabachi, while serving on the USS Oceanus in the South Pacific during WWII, was born August 1, 1921 and passed away on October 1, 2011 at home with his children at his side.
Robert was a Longshoreman (ILWU Local #13) for 52 years. The former coach, all star softball and Pepsi All American, played in eight Softball World Championships, was an active South Bay Community member. Robert (Bobby "Hoopla" Costa) was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Virginia H. Costa. Robert is survived by his 3 devoted children, Robyn and her husband, Shawn King, Ronald and his wife, Rosanne Costa and Edward and his wife, Margaret Costa; his 4 grandchildren, Karlee (Patrick) Buckley, Todd (Michelle) Costa, Marc Costa and Kimberly Costa; 2 great-grandchildren, Addison Buckley and Charlie Buckley, and a host of other family and close friends. The Memorial Service for Mr. Costa will be Thursday, October 6th at 1:00 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.
