My father was a man with a lot of pride. He often recounted the challenges he faced with a unique blend of humility and pride that profoundly shaped his character. My Dad was renowned for his stubbornness….. That runs in the family…. Beneath that tough exterior, beat a heart filled with love…..A love he did not always outwardly display.
Richard Gregorio Hernandez Sr was born on April 16th, 1940, in terminal island California, at home to his parents Salvador and Sally Hernandez.
Richard attended San Pedro high School and graduated class of winter 1959. Richard was also apart of the San Pedro High football team.
After high school my father went down to work on the docks along side his dad, Salvador Hernandez, my grandfather. Richard would go on to work on the water front for close to 30 years before retiring.
Richard was survived by his sisters Carmen Uzeta and Louise Garcia. He fathered 7 children - Richard Hernandez, his first born. Theresa Decker, Mario Hayes, Crystal Burnette, Monica Reeves, Ruben Hernandez Sr.
With 6 step children – Lisa, Marina, Jessica, Brandy, Raymond, and JJ. With 33 grandkids and 27 great grandkids. In total with all his children. “Hey don’t look at me”…”I only have 3 kids”
