Regis Beron passed September 24 in Harbor City at the age of 92.
A native of Kansas, she and her family were impacted by the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl years. Regis left her hometown to join other women who took over jobs typically held by men during World War II. In her case, she worked as a radio operator for United Airlines during several of the war years, continuing with the airline until her marriage to Anthony Beron. Together they had two daughters. The family settled in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Her husband ultimately became an executive with Douglas Aircraft Company and McDonnell-Douglas Corporation. After her children entered high school, Regis began work related to income taxes, beginning with a private income tax firm before joining the Internal Revenue Service as a taxpayer assistant, finishing her career as an auditor. Upon her retirement, Regis dedicated her efforts toward assisting the poor, working through her parish, St. John Fisher, as well as other groups that worked to provide for disadvantaged people. She was honored for this work by Agape, an organization at her parish focused on assisting the poor of Mexico, in 2004.
Regis was especially devoted to her family and participated in her daughters' and husband's many pursuits. The family home was always open to family members serving in the military as well as their friends and Regis became a well-loved "second mom" to many young men serving during the Vietnam War. In her spare time, Regis enjoyed gardening, restoring antique mantel clocks, crocheting, quilting, and refinishing furniture. Time spent with family was her greatest happiness.
Regis is survived by her two daughters, Toni Beron Hudson and Deborah Beron-Rawdon; two grand-daughters, Kendra Lakkees and Sonja Henderson; three great-grandsons, Adam Watson, Jr., and Jaden and Travis Henderson; two sisters, Marguerite Sanderson and Pauline Fellows, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews across the country. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, seven brothers, three sisters and a great-grandson.
Services will be held Monday, October 5 beginning at 11 a.m. with praying of the rosary and Roman Catholic Mass at St. John Fisher Parish in Rancho Palos Verdes. Burial will be at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Agape at St. John Fisher Parish, 5448 Crest Rd., Rancho Palos Verdes CA 90275.
