Ray "Horn" Patricio passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2012. Ray was born in Sausalito to
Fred (Pat) and Mary on July 1, 1923. He moved to San Pedro in 1928 and lived here his entire life. Ray attended Barton Hill, Dana and then San Pedro High School. As a member of the Boys' Club, he began his life-long involvement with sports. During World War II, Ray spent three (3) years fighting in the Pacific front in the 389th AAA Battalion. He received numerous medals including the Soldiers Medal for saving the life of a fellow soldier. Upon his return to San Pedro, he met and married Lola Christina Thomas in 1947. They raised six children together. Ray began working as a longshoreman in 1948 and continued until he retired in 1988. He was a proud member of ILWU13 and ILWU94 and continued his active belief in unions as an officer in the Southern California ILWU Pensioners. Ray was always active in community affairs. He coached at Holy Trinity for 28 years touching many young people's lives. In his later years, he was a member of the Peck Park Advisory Board and elected to the Northwest San Pedro Council. Many people in San Pedro called him the Goat Man because of his efforts to bring goats to Peck Park Canyon and develop a game preserve for children to enjoy. His efforts were the key to development of the Peck Park Canyon. Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Lola Christine; his brothers Bill and Fred (Spider); son, Michael; son-in-law, Peter Thurston. He is survived by his sister, Lucille; sons, James (Cindy) and Paul (Grace); daughters, Frances Thurston, Catherine, and Raeann; grandchildren, Harmony and Christina Thurston, Lisa De Leon (Paul), Monique Patricio; and great-granddaughters, Lauren and Lola. Funeral service will be held Monday, August 6, 2012, 1 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Chapel, 27501 South Western Ave. Rancho Palos Verdes, California 90275.
