He was born Raymond Takashi Goto on April 08, 1952, in Tokyo, Japan. Ray attended and graduated from North High School, where he played volleyball. He originally went to UC Riverside to pursue a degree in Biology but transferred to Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he continued his volleyball journey playing for the collegiate team. After graduating, he landed a job as the director of video production for the Red Onion restaurant chain. He decided to keep pursuing his newfound passion in film production. He worked as a cameraman for many companies (even landing a job as an extra in Karate Kid 2.) He then started his company, South Bay Broadcast Inc., where he leased video equipment such as cameras, lighting, and sound. He then started another company called Edit Source, where he rented out post-production editing equipment.
Around the same time, he became a real estate investor, buying properties first in LA and then expanding to Utah, Florida, and Washington.
As a child, Ray spent his summers with his grandma in Waikiki, where he discovered his passion for surfing. When he returned to California, he continued to surf in the South Bay, especially Torrance Beach. He also enjoyed skiing at places like Mammoth, Big Bear, and Mountain High. In addition, he enjoyed going to the gym, swimming, paddle boarding, traveling, and eating good food.
