Mr. Paul, Pao-Cheng, Chia was born in LaoTing, Hebei providence, China on 5/18/1919. He spent part of his childhood in Manchuria. He attended Tangshan 4th middle school and Beijing 4th high school. During the Japanese invasion of China, he climbed the Tai-Hung mountain range, over an 18-day period, to reach Chungking to attend College of Political Sciences in order to fulfill his life-time dream as a civil servant. After graduation, he returned to Beijing to work as the special assistant for the mayor, and married Miss Chi Ching-su in 1947. In early 1949, the couple escaped to Taiwan after the communists entered Beijing.
He worked as a special assistant for the mayor of GuoShung. Subsequently, he came to Taipei to work for the nationalist government, and took on a part-time job as an editor for Central Daily Newspaper. In 1960, he passed a qualifying examination for foreign studies and secured a scholarship to come to America to further his education. After graduating from University of S.F. with a master degree in political sciences, and serving as editor for Young China daily in S.F., he started a teaching career at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. In 1968, he assisted his wife and second son to come to U.S. He worked at the institute until 70 years of age. He received numerous awards for teaching excellence.
During retirement years, he enjoyed reading, writing short stories, poetry and Chinese calligraphy.
Paul passed away on October 11, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Alice, two sons, Tim and John, and 4 grandchildren, Vanessa, Nick, Laura and Andrew.
Paul, you gave us love, wisdom, and opportunities to be accomplished in our lives. You taught us to analyze complicated issues, pursue higher education and learn to persevere in difficult times. We have fond memory of the funny and happy moments we had together. Rest in peace, our beloved husband, father and grandfather. Our loves are with you always.
