Patricia Eileen Bethancourt Martin was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 20, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, to Bruce A. Bethancourt, Sr. and Eileen E. Fairbanks Bethancourt, now deceased. Patty passed away at Torrance Memorial Hospital on January 18, 2023. Patty was the second of eight children of Bruce and Eileen. Patty attended St. Agnes Elementary school and Gerard Catholic High School, in Phoenix, and Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. She resided with her family in Redondo Beach and Rolling Hills Estates area since 1966. Patty worked as a dispatcher for the Redondo Beach Fire Department and Police Department and as Director of Human Resources for John A. Martin & Associates.
Patty is survived by her attentive husband “Trailer” John A. Martin Jr., and her three children Peggy Martin-Maddox (Alan Maddox), Michael Bauer-Martin, and John “Trip” Martin III (Monica Martin), who she was very proud of. Patty was blessed with five grandchildren: Chloe Martin, Gabriel Martin, Oliver Bauer, Elizabeth Bauer, and Thomas Bauer. She enjoyed a very close and loving relationship with her children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Bruce A. Bethancourt, Jr. (Lee) and “Bucky” Kevin Bethancourt (Lisa), and sisters Mary Alice Burke (Joe), Joanne Allen, Sheila Bethancourt (Pete Cedor), and Shauna DeBevec (Ed). Her brother, Michael A. Bethancourt (Sharon) predeceased Patty in 2016.
Most of all Patty will be remembered for the love, kindness, and generosity she had for her family and friends. Whether it was a holiday gathering, a night of trivial pursuit, or dinner at the Blue Moon Saloon her infectious smile, humor, and lively personality would light the room when she entered. She shared her zest for life with everyone, and her laugh will resound forever in our hearts. Patty also enjoyed travelling with Trailer and friends all over the world and as an art history major loved visiting churches and museums in Europe.
Funeral mass to be held 1pm, Saturday, January 28, 2023, at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 1940 S Prospect Ave, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Interment to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 S Western Ave, Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA 90275. Family and friends are invited to gather afterwards for a celebration of life at the San Pedro Elks Lodge, 1748 Cumbre Dr, San Pedro, CA 90732.
