Patricia Weaver Hill

March 10, 1935 — March 17, 2023

Patricia Weaver Hill passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 17, 2023, just one week after her 88th birthday.

Pat was born in San Pedro on March 10, 1935 to Jean and John Winters. Her parents had emigrated to the US from Scotland by way of Canada. Pat was the first of her family born in America, as her older brothers (Charles and Jack Winters) were born in Scotland. When Pat was just 3 years old, her father suddenly passed away, and when her mother later remarried to Harry Weaver, he became the man she called father and who helped provide her a wonderful childhood.

In 1953, Pat graduated from San Pedro High School and then attended UCLA to earn her degree in Education. While there, Pat joined Alpha Phi sorority and began her lifelong enthusiasm for her alma mater. In 1956, she married the love of her life, Lowell Martin Hill, also from San Pedro. They moved to the Bay Area for Lowell to attend Stanford Medical School, and that’s where Pat took her first teaching job in Menlo Park. They started their family in 1961 by having their first two children at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, where her husband was now in his residency. While in North Carolina she stopped teaching to raise her children. (And always a huge sports fan, Pat added Duke to her beloved UCLA as a team she would loyally support throughout her life!). The family soon moved back to Southern California to Palos Verdes to be with family and friends, and then after the death of her husband in 1973, Pat and her children lived on Catalina Island where they had a summer home. In 1975, Pat moved the family back to Palos Verdes where she resumed her teaching career as a 2nd grade teacher at Rolling Hills Country Day School. She loved teaching the young students and stayed there for almost 30 years until her retirement in 2005 at the age of 70.

Pat enjoyed a long life of service, as she was devoted to giving back to her community. She was involved for many years with the Assisteens League of San Pedro, PEO, Girl Scouts, and RH Methodist Church. She also held several offices with the LA Philharmonic, including co-chairing the PV Music Fair and teaching children through The Music Mobile at local elementary schools. She was always the first to volunteer as team mom or leader for many of her son and daughters’ numerous childhood sports and activities.

Doting on her kids and grandkids brought joy and meaning to Pat’s life. She was blessed to have many lifelong friends, and some of her happiest memories include summers spent at the beach in Catalina with her dear friends and beloved bridge group. She was an avid reader and always had a book by her side. She always seemed to have a story to tell and loved hearing a good one as well! Her love of learning extended to her enjoyment of meeting new people, and she never forgot a face or the stories she heard from friends old or new.

A special thanks to the staff and friends who took such good care of her at The Canterbury for her last few years. Her family remains forever grateful.

Patricia is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Hill) Ryan; her son and daughter-in-law, Lowell and Lisa Hill; and her daughter and son-in-law, Cyndi (Hill) Gittes and Mark Gittes. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren (Cole, Connor, Katie, Aly, George and Foster) and her 2 great-grandchildren (Paxton and Tatum). Her big heart, joyful nature and love of learning will forever be with them.

A private family celebration of life will be held in the near future at Green Hills, where she will be placed next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Los Angeles Philharmonic or the Rolling Hills Methodist Church.
