Patricia Castles, 68, entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at home, surrounded by her sister Loretta, niece Kathy and dear friend Dr. Bill Kim.
She was born in Colorado, Feb. 17, 1945, the youngest daughter of the late Truman and Janie Castles. As a young student, Patty had a great passion for speech and debate, and was quite accomplished. While at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, she was invited to join the National Forensic League. Patty's ability to inspire those around her was recognized by the International Order of Job's Daughters, Bethel No. 19, as she reigned as Honored Queen ('61-'62). She continued to pursue her love for the English language, while attending Long Beach State. Not only did she participate in the Southern California Forensic League, but she graduated with a BA in Education and went on to become an English teacher.
In 1968, Patty began teaching at Aviation High School, where her enthusiasm and passion inspired an award winning Forensic Team. When Aviation closed, Patty joined the faculty at Redondo Union High School. Patty was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2000 for her exceptional devotion and outstanding service. She was a devoted English teacher and department chair until she retired in 2007. Following her retirement, she continued teaching in the Redondo Beach Unified School District Independent Study program.
Patty loved being a teacher and seeing a 'light' come on when a student grasp something new. With her patient and encouraging manner, she shaped the lives of many students. Patty's work ethic was famous. She could often be found in her classroom late at night and on weekends. She served as a mentor and a master teacher to many teachers who now currently teach in the district. Patty's wisdom was highly respected and her counsel was sought by many teachers and close friends. She was also well known for her excellent curriculum development. She never got tired of teaching the novel Lord of the Flies, finding new perspectives with each reading. All those who knew her and loved her will weep for the loss of their true, wise friend, Patty. Patty valued the relationships developed during her years of teaching and felt very fulfilled by them.
Patty loved our Lord Jesus Christ. She reflected Christ's love to all. She will be remembered as a courageous, compassionate, and optimistic person who loved helping others. She had a zest for life and brought joy, love, wisdom and guidance to all who knew her. Patty loved planning adventures and shopping for others. She enjoyed all types of music, good food, sunsets, and the sound of the ocean. Her quick wit and sense of humor brightened so many of our days. All who knew Patty were truly blessed to know a kind, generous soul, devoted to her family and countless friends. She gave others her highest regard, with unreserved generosity. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. Thank you to all who have so enriched her life, simply just by loving her and being a part of it.
She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her; loving sister & brother in-law, Loretta and Fred McClintock, of Naperville, IL; adoring nieces, Michelle and her husband Shawn Moore, Kathy and her husband Ken McNeill; Kristine and her husband Terry Thornton; seven great nieces and nephews; as well as her devoted friends and students. Patty leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and laughter.
A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013 for those unable to attend Monday's services.
