Our beloved father, grandpa and great-grandpa passed away peacefully on December 31, 2011 with his family by his side. He was 91.
Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Owen moved to San Pedro, CA at the age of 3. He attended Los Angeles High and then Loyola University of Los Angeles. After graduating in 1942, Owen enlisted in the Navy, serving proudly in the Asiatic-Pacific area and Philippine Liberation campaigns receiving six battle stars. Owen ended his war duties in 1945 as the commanding officer of a minesweeper. He was 24. After the war, Owen attended Loyola Law School and began practicing law in 1950, specializing in criminal defense. During the mid 1970's, his sons Philip, Mark and Frank joined the firm. Owen continued to be actively involved in the firm until his death. During the course of his sixty-one years of practicing law, Owen tried over 400 jury trials and was considered one of the most prominent and successful defense lawyers of his time. In 2000, Owen received a lifetime achievement award from the Criminal Courts Bar Association of Los Angeles. A true Irishman, Owen was a fantastic storyteller, avid reader and loved golfing, traveling to Ireland more than ten times to play the links with his children and have a pint or two. His greatest loves were his family, God and friends.
