The Mardesich and Borelli families are sad to announce the passing of our beloved Nick Mardesich on January 4, 2023. Nick was born in San Pedro, CA, September 14 1946, to parents Emil and Mary Mardesich.
The second of three sons, he remained in "Pedro" until graduating from San Pedro High School, in 1964. Always extremely intelligent and athletic, he went on to higher education. He earned his BS in Physics and MS in Physics from CSU Long Beach, while also participating on the men's gymnastics team. Expanding his knowledge further, he earned a second MS in Material Science with a minor in Semiconductor Engineering from UCLA. Nick enjoyed a long career at Jet Propulsion Laboratories authoring numerous research papers and holding several patents. He was repeatedly recognized by NASA for his significant contributions to projects including the Hubble Space Telescope and Mars Rover missions.
During his brilliant career, he found the time to lead a full life as well. To his daughter Zorah, he was a loving single father who filled the house with music and fun. To his parents, he was a reliable helper. To the Gourmet Club, he was an avid record collector and trader, a source of sound advice and corny jokes. To his racquetball partners, he was a fearsome opponent. To his wife JoAnn, he was a soulmate, who enthusiastically embraced her daughters Angie and Jodi as his own. To his grandchildren, he was Papa Nick, who loved them. Above all, Nick will be remembered by everyone he met for his unhesitating generosity, and his remarkable kindness and gentle good nature.
Nick is survived by his wife, JoAnn Borelli Mardesich, daughters Zorah, Angie, and Jodi, brothers Emil Jr. and Peter (Kay), grandchildren Joseph, Genevieve, Maxwell, and Zephyr, as well as his nieces and nephews. We will all carry his bright smile in our hearts forever.
A memorial service in celebration of Nick will be held at 10 am on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Green Hills Mortuary in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Nick left an immortal legacy in the stars, where his work will influence science for generations. More importantly, in the hearts and memories of everyone whose life was brightened by his presence.
