Nell Hulsey

June 4, 1923 — February 4, 2013

Nell was born on June 4, 1923 and grew up in Birmingham and Millport, Alabama with her two sisters, Lola and Elette. Following her marriage to Bill Hulsey in 1946, the newlyweds moved to Long beach, CA where they were blessed with the births of their two sons, Ted and Don. Shortly thereafter, Nell and Bill moved to their new and permanent home in San Pedro.
During the years her sons were growing up, Nell was a loving and devoted mother, involved in her children's school activities as well as family camping trips. Nell was active in the PTA and San Pedro's First Presbyterian Church as well as volunteering her time for various charities and clubs.
A creative and talented homemaker, Nell was involved in numerous arts and crafts and grew skilled in basketry, sewing and decorative painting. Nell loved socializing and spent many happy times with a wide circle of friends in both San Pedro and The Silent Valley Club, an RV resort in Banning, CA where she and Bill were members for over 30 years. She took great pleasure in square dancing, card playing, reading and long walks.
Nell also had a sense of adventure and delighted in travel. During their lifetime together, Nell and Bill visited all 50 states and toured over 40 countries. They were a true love match and celebrated close to 62 years of marriage.
Following the death of her beloved husband in 2007, Nell continued to stay fully engaged in life, energetic and always relevant to the times. In her early 80's, Nell enrolled in a computer course and became proficient in creating her own greeting cards and e-mail correspondence.
It was just a few years ago that she accompanied her son and his wife to South Africa where she rode an ostrich, tussled with a monkey and was first in line at dawn to set out on safari into the African bush. She never missed a beat. Needless to say, Nell was the "rock star" of the tour group.
Everyone who knew Nell was attracted to her charm and ageless capacity to live and enjoy life with enthusiasm and flair. She endeared herself to all who met her and will be deeply missed. It is comforting to know Nell laughed often, lived well and loved much; and while her travels on earth have come to an end, we believe she continues to travel with the angels.
Nell is survived by her two sons, daughter-in-law and extended family and friends.
