Mike F. Karmelich

June 6, 1926 — July 13, 2017

MIKE FRANK KARMELICH passed away peacefully at home on July 13, 2017, at the age of 91. He is survived by Marcella, his wife of more than 70 years. Mike is also survived by two sons – Michael (Carolyn) and Frank (Mary); four grandchildren – Robert Karmelich (Danelle), Kimberlee Karmelich, Karrie Stratton (Curtis), and Sarah Silane (Mike); and six great-grandchildren – Julia, Sophia, Jordan, Christopher, Nicholai and Justin. In addition, he is survived by his sister Dolores Wyatt Villa and sister-in-law Marie Karmelich. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Ben Karmelich.

Mike was born and raised in San Pedro and was a 1944 graduate of SPHS. Shortly after graduation he joined the army and spent two years in the Pacific Theater. He was always a very proud veteran! He married Marcella a month after his discharge (December 8, 1946) and they made their home in San Pedro for all of their 70 years.

After early jobs with the Telephone Company and as a milkman for Golden State Dairy, he worked for 40 years as a proud member of ILWU Local 13, and will be remembered most for his 25 years as the Records Office Clerk.

Mike was very active in youth sports, coaching several basketball teams at the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, where he also served many years as a Board Member. However, his passion was youth baseball where he spent some 47 years coaching little league, pony league, and then more than 30 years with the Mary Star Connie Mack baseball program. Several of his former players went on to have very nice professional careers.

Above all, Mike loved his family. He and Marcella spent much of their spare time attending sports events and theater productions of grandchildren and then great-grandchildren. They set a wonderful example in marriage for all of the family. He was a devoted husband, a great father, and a doting grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all of the family.

Funeral services for Mike will be Monday, July 24, 2017 at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 870 W 8th St. in San Pedro at 10:30 AM, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in Mike's name be made to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club.
