Michael Angelo Zamperini

June 29, 1949 — December 18, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather (Papa), uncle, brother and friend. On June 29, 1949 Michael was born to Guido and Virginia (Galvin) Zamperini. He attended 15th Street Elementary, Dana Junior High, graduated from San Pedro High School in 1967 and earned a degree in education from Cal State Dominguez. He met Florence, his soulmate and best friend in the summer of 1966 and they married on May 22, 1968. Michael followed his father down to the docks working as a longshoreman and then a clerk before retiring in 2010, 41 good years. Mike and Flo raised 4 children in San Pedro. When Mike wasn’t working he coached the kids’ teams at Eastview and Bobby Sox and supported their athletics and extra curriculars as often as he could. After a back injury in the late 80s he even played “Mr. Mom” to the kids while Flo went to work. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shriners, San Pedro Wednesday Club and enjoyed getting together with his group of friends from high school at Averill park. Mike traveled over the years to see his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren when they were stationed in other parts of the country and overseas. They traveled to their timeshares, often with the kids in tow, as he always wanted to be surrounded by family. In the last few years he was back at the fields to watch his youngest grandchildren play sports. Mike loved to read, watching a good Romantic Comedy, and having a good meal with Flo out and around town. Mike had a heart of gold, his kindness and generosity were unmeasurable and always shared his unforgettable smile, his infectious laugh and sense of humor. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 54 years, Florence. Children Jennifer (Ray Schaeffer), Jason Michael, Joy (Dan Pulu), Julie Amanda and stepson Dana Hartman (Traci). 7 grandchildren, Michael and Madison Schaeffer, Allyson Fiore, Dylan and Dominic Pulu, Sierra and Lucas Hartman, 2 great grandchildren Oliver and Everly. Sisters Esther Imbagliazzo (Dan) and Nancy Marpe (Frank), as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Viewing to be held at Green Hills Mortuary and Memorial Chapel 27501 S Western Ave, RPV, CA. Fri. Jan 6th 5-8:30pm and Memorial service Sat. Jan7th at 9:00am. Suits not required, colorful welcome too, Mike would have wanted you to be comfortable. In lieu of flowers he also would have loved for you to send to the charity of your choice as he was a contributor to many that were dear to his heart.
