Michael J. Freschi

Michael John Freschi, 81, passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 5, 2012 surrounded by his family. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April.
Born in Washington, D.C. to Michael and Helen Freschi, he lived in the South Bay for more than 56 years, the last 29 in Redondo Beach. Michael was valedictorian at Washington Lee High School and served in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from California State University, Los Angeles and became an electrical engineer developing test equipment for local aerospace companies. He later followed a lifelong dream to work in sales and was extremely successful, retiring from Tektronix in 1998.
While serving in the Air Force, Mike met Virginia Johnson and they were married in Tulsa, OK in 1953. They complimented and loved each other deeply while travelling the world and meeting new friends. They enjoyed raising their children and, later, spending time with three grandchildren. Mike loved camping with his family and playing volleyball, card and board games.
Mike was committed to his faith; he and Ginny were active in the Manhattan Beach Community Church. For more than 15 years, he volunteered at the Redondo Beach Library and delivered food to seniors for Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed flying radio-controlled gliders off the cliffs of Redondo Beach, attending musicals and spending time with his family, friends and dog, Isabel
He was preceded in death by his brother Jim. Mike is survived by his wife, Virginia; his brother, Robert; children James Freschi, Joan (Michael) Millar and Jennifer (Victor) Vanden Oever; grandchildren Jessica (James) Phillips, Jolene Millar, Parker Vanden Oever; and many nieces and nephews.
Interment will be at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. A celebration of his life will be held at Manhattan Beach Community Church, 303 S. Peck Ave, Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the church's Scholarship Fund are welcome in memory of Mike.
