We are celebrating the life our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend Mercedes Nisby Joubert, the seventh child of Thomas Alfred Nisby and Lilian Lumpkin Nisby of Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Mercedes attended Southern University in Baton Rouge Louisiana where she majored in music, played the french horn and trombone in the marching band and was a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority.
It was on the Southern campus where she met her future husband Lionel Harold Joubert of Washington, Louisiana. After their courtship they married and were blessed with two daughters, Paula Marie and Ina Lynn.
After the family moved to Los Angeles over sixty years ago, Mercedes lovingly balanced the roles of wife, mother and schoolteacher and was a great support to Lionel as he became an administrator and Principal. It was after joining Wesley United Methodist church in the early 1950's that Mercedes and Lionel became apart of the "young adult group" and continued to maintain life-long friendships.
Mercedes took an active role as a member of Gardena First United Methodist Church since 1965. Together with her husband, she participated in various other community organizations and vigorously supported USC's football program.
Mercedes is survived by her two sisters Verlie Mae Pickens and Vera Miyasaki, her two daughters, her four grand children, Tamaron, Miya, Ivana, Alexander, her sons-in-law Moses and Michael and her extended family Perla, Jackie, Derrick, Marlena, Terry, Yvonne, Nina, Kela, Tim and numerous great-grands (Tuoyos, Williams and Robinsons).
