Melvin Beryle Elkin passed away at home on June 6, 2013. Mel was born in Los Angeles, California, to James Henry Elkin and Olive Marie Morse on November 25, 1925. He grew up with his sister Corrine Budd in San Diego and attended Saint Augustine High School. He joined the Navy in 1944 and served as a radio operator on the Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) 463 in the Pacific Theatre. On returning to California at the end of the war, he attended Loyola University and after graduating with Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1951 went on to work at Hughes Aircraft Company in El Segundo, California starting in engineering and later production management, retiring in 1989. He married Kathleen O'Brien, from Pembroke, Kentucky on February 19, 1961 and moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula where they raised three sons and made their home. Mel loved history, travel, sailing, camping and fishing, reading books, carpentry and cabinet making, and walking the trails of Palos Verdes making friends with the local dogs. Mel is survived by his wife, and three sons: Michael, Patrick and Barry, daughter-in-law, Terese Kluzik, son-in-law, John Wikstrom and grand daughter, Feza Marie.
