Mavis J. Grubb

July 2, 1927 — April 19, 2021

Mavis J. Grubb, age 93, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021, at home in Torrance, California. She was born on July 2, 1927, in Rossville, Georgia, to Roy and Mattie (Grissom) Cannon, and was the youngest of seven children.

Mavis grew up in Cleveland, Tennessee, where she attended school and worked in the Hardwick Woolen and Hosiery mills. These jobs instilled in her a love of sewing and Mavis became an excellent seamstress.

In 1944, she married James C. Grubb, also from Cleveland. Mavis and James lived in Cleveland until 1958, when they moved to Hawthorne, California. Married for 63 years, James preceded her in death in September 2007. To their union were born two surviving children, Charles R. Grubb (Katheryn), and Lisa Jo (Stephen R. Johnson).

Mavis was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Eastview, Tennessee, and Paramount, California, where she served in various roles including secretary, treasurer, Sunday School teacher and small group leader. She also worked for Montgomery Ward in Hawthorne, California, for 20 years, in the drapery and home goods departments.

Mavis was a loving wife and mother. She always had a warm, welcoming smile for family and friends. She loved to entertain and often welcomed family members into her home for extended stays. Mavis's siblings all preceded her in death. She is the longest living member of her immediate family, and is survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family in Tennessee, Texas, Oregon and Thailand. Mavis will be dearly missed by her children, family and friends.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many doctors and nurses at Torrance Memorial Physicians Network, Palliative Care and Hospice Care teams, who so lovingly took care of Mavis in her final months.

Services for Mavis will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The family will greet friends for a visitation in the Green Hills Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2021, in the Memorial Chapel at 9:30 a.m., with the Rev. R. Zachary Brooks, officiating, followed by a graveside interment.
