Mary Socorro Serrato

November 9, 1934 — March 1, 2019

Mary Socorro “Socs” Serrato passed away peacefully on March 1, 2019. She was 84 years old. Socorro is survived by her children Linda Serrato, John Serrato, Steve Serrato and David Serrato. She is also survived by her daughter-inlaws, Marilyn, Edith and Lydia and her grandchildren Isaac, Nicole, John, Nick, Ruben and Megan Serrato and Adele and Paul Pfister III. She is survived by her great-grandchildren: Ella Rosales, Mia and Jensen Serrato, Lillyana Carrillo, Paul Pfister IV and Sage Hooper. Socorro was born on November 9,1934 in Wilmington, California. She was the only child of Manuel and Manuela Rivera. She grew up in San Pedro, California and attended Barton Hill and Mary Star Schools and San Pedro High School. She was especially close to her cousins Joe, Ralph, Jimmy, Esther and Ruth Sias who treated her like a sister. She married John Serrato in 1953 and immediately became a beloved member of the Serrato family. She and John moved to San Francisco in 1959. There they were “adopted” by the Kamoku family and the the two families still have deep ties. They also made many other dear and life-long friends while living there. In 1973 Socorro moved back to the Los Angeles area with her three sons. She worked for the Korody Colyer Company for 25 years until she retired. She was a well known person in the San Pedro community and was a member of the San Pedro Wednesday Club for several years. Socorro was a fantastic cook and was known for her Mexican dishes especially her salsa. Family and friends often put in requests for her specialities for their special events and she was always happy to comply. She had a sparkling personality. She loved people and loved to have a good time. She was a favorite at parties as she enjoyed socializing and was a fabulous dancer. Socorro was also very kind and was a good listener. People always knew they could come to her for advice or just to have an understanding person to talk to.She was always willing to lend a helping hand. Socorro was a loving mother and grandmother, a wonderful auntie and a loyal kind friend. She will be missed very much by all. Those who had the good fortune to know her can count themselves very blessed.
