Mary Evelyn Mcgee- Sancho

January 17, 2012 — January 17, 2012

Mary Evelyn McGee-Sancho, affectionately known to her family as "Mother Dea", was born on October 22, 1925 to the union of Oliver and Elnora Hawkins and raised by her grandmother Mary Lee Hawkins in Texarkana, Arkansas. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. In the late 1940's she moved from Texarkana to California and settled in San Pedro where she was an active member at Union Baptist Church for 63 years. Even though she settled and raised her family in San Pedro, she referred to herself as a "simple farm girl" who nurtured her plants and cherished her animals. She loved to spend time with her family and friends, cooking and eating good food, and dressing elegantly to worship the Lord every Sunday, complete with a stylishly paired hat. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, grandmother and sister. She leaves to cherish her memory, her sister, Willetta Washington of Compton, California; four sons, Melvin Haynes (Patricia) of Long Beach, California, Billy O'Bannon (Teresita) of Lake Forest, California, Ray McGee (Nina) of Carson, California and Jackie McGee (Carolyn) of San Pedro, California. She is also survived by Margarett Haynes, Elaine McGee and Lilly Harris; 19 grandchildren, a plethora of great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19 from 3-8 pm at Green Hills Mortuary. Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, January 20 at 9 am at Green Hills Memorial Chapel.
