Mary Ellen Hunter

Mary Ellen Hunter was born in Longview, Texas and was the only child to William and Sarah Jones. Mary and her parents moved from Texas to Colorado then to Redondo Beach when she was 13 years old. From there they settled in Lomita, where Mary began attending Torrance High School in the seventh grade and graduated Winter class of 1953. Mary, her husband, and son, Robert moved to Torrance in 1965. Mary worked for the telephone company, a paint company, and a lumber company for many years; including Los Angeles County. In 1968 her and her then husband moved to Parker, Arizona where they owned and operated the Rum Runner for about three years. In 1971 Mary re-instated with Los Angeles County where she worked in the Emergency room. In 1996 Mary retired from Los Angeles County with a total 29 years of service as a Financial Services Supervisor. Throughout her life, Mary experienced many adventures and would tell stories colored and woven with her dry sense of humor and her perfect recounts of history and time; which will be greatly missed by all that she has touched. She was a handywoman who could build, repair, design most anything. She was also an artist who enjoyed painting ceramics, creating outdoor wood paintings for all the holidays to be displayed in her front yard where she delighted in seeing people enjoying her creations, young and old. Whenever someone, anyone needed a home or a meal, Mary never turned away a soul. Throughout her life, Mary touched numerous people with her unconditional love and her firm, yet gentle guidance. She raised children that were not her own in to adults that might never have had a chance and with Mary's strength, wisdom, and unwavering love, they were provided with that chance. Adults who lost their way, she rescued, and guided them back. Some lost their battles and could never be re-directed but this never stopped her from providing meals, shelter, clothing to them. Where others would see bad, she saw good. Mary is preceded in death by her father and mother, and son, Robert Hunter. She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Hunter, grandson Christian Hunter, granddaughter Jessie Ingram, and daughter-in-law Leslie Ingram. Mary was "mom" to many, a devoted and loving friend, and a person that many will never forget.
