MARY ELLEN FRANKLIN
OCTOBER 30, 1919 --- MARCH 19, 2012
Mary Ellen, who passed away at Windcrest, was a native Californian born in Los Angeles in 1919. After attending LA schools she graduated from UCLA in 1939 with a major in history. In 1940 she married William W. Franklin, an electrical engineering graduate from the University of California at Berkeley. An ROTC member her husband was called into service before Pearl Harbor. During the war they lived for a time at the Presidio in San Francisco. He left the service in 1945 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Signal Corps.
They lived in Big Bear Lake for 10 years then Redondo Beach for 35 years during which her husband enjoyed a distinguished career serving as president and later Chairman of the Board of the Southern California Water Company and on the Los Angeles County Water Board for 35 years. William passed away in 1993.
Mary Ellen had three children; Barbara, a school teacher who lives in Huntington Beach, Patricia, now deceased and a son, Richard who lives in Manhattan Beach. There are five grandchildren, three grandsons and two granddaughters, also five great grandchildren. She and her husband traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Israel, Egypt and all of the United States and Canada. They particularly favored Mexico, studying Spanish to make trips more enjoyable.
At Regents Point she was active, particularly enjoying swimming, bridge and the programs. She read a great deal and took many of the short trips offered.
She was a member of Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church in Turtle Rock.
Services will be held Saturday at Green Hills Memorial Park on Western Avenue in Palos Verdes where her husband and Patricia are buried. Anyone wishing to leave a memorial in her honor may contribute to RP Foundation supporting Alzheimers at Harvard House.
