Mary Louise Brenneman M.D. passed away peacefully, on June 3, 2023, at 99 ½, in her home in Manhattan Beach , California, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, after a long bout with cholecystitis, cholangitis, and subsequent pancreatitis.
Mary was born to Laura and George Edward Black, in Sewickley, PA, on October 14, 1923. The third of 5 daughters: Eleanor, Doris, Mary, and twins Nan & Ruth.
She is survived by her children; Gayne (Robert Slay M.D) Brenneman M.D., Jim Brenneman, Donna (Christopher) Barry, Heidi (John M.) Dowd, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
She was married to Richard H. Brenneman PhD, from 1950-1972, and he was Mary’s true love, of her entire life. She will be interned next to Richard, at the Odd Fellows Cemetery ,in Pottsville, PA. this coming fall.
She was one of three women to graduate from Toronto University Medical School in Pediatrics. In 2022, she received a 75-year alumni medal, from the University, as their longest living alumni.
She also worked with Jonas Salk, on the polio vaccine.
In Pediatrics, she worked as a school doctor, and a camp doctor, during the summers, at Camp Plantation, a farm in Northern CA, where her children were campers.
She collaborated with Richard, at NASA, designing an early verision of the “Moon Walker” that could transport people over difficult terrain, on the moon.
After completing her Psychiatric residency at Camarillo State Hospital, she worked at UCLA, USC, St. John’s Hospital and Norwalk State Hospital. Additionally, she had a busy private practice in Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica.
She revered Jungian theory, especially the significance of dreams in therapy. Joseph Campbell’s work affected her practice with the importance of symbols and mythology. She even held dream workshops, in her home, until her late 90’s.
